There is something truly special about the first trip of the season, isn’t there? You’ve spent the winter months checking the seals, airing out the upholstery, and perhaps daydreaming over a map of the NC500 or the rolling hills of the Dordogne. But as we head into the 2026 touring season, there’s a bit more to think about than just whether you’ve packed enough tea bags or if the leisure battery is holding its charge.
If you’re a member of the Caravan and Motorhome Club, you’ve likely heard whispers about the big “Red Pennant” shake-up. For years, it was the go-to safety net for those of us who like to take our homes on the road. But as of early 2026, the old guard has stepped aside to make way for a completely refreshed version of the product.
It’s a bit like upgrading from an old reliable map to a high-definition sat-nav – the destination is the same, but the way you get there is a whole lot smoother. So, before you hitch up or turn the ignition, let’s look at what’s changed and why it matters for your 2026 adventures.
Out with the Old, In with the New
For a long time, the Red Pennant Overseas Emergency Assistance was the standard. But as the world changes – and let’s be honest, travel has become a bit more complex lately – the Club decided it was time for a refresh. They’ve teamed up with PJ Hayman, a specialist in the travel insurance world, to build something that fits the way we travel today.
If you already had a policy before January 30, 2026, don’t panic. Your cover is still valid until its expiry date. But for any new trips or renewals, the “new” Red Pennant is what you’ll be looking at. It’s no longer just “assistance”; it’s a full-blown travel insurance product designed specifically for the touring community.

The £5 Million Safety Net
One of the biggest headlines in the 2026 refresh is the boost to medical cover. We all like to think we’re invincible – and hopefully, the worst thing that happens on your trip is a flat tyre or a rainy afternoon in Cornwall – but life has a way of throwing curveballs.
The new policy offers up to £5 million in emergency medical expenses. That sounds like a Hollywood-sized number, doesn’t it? But when you consider the cost of private medical care in some parts of Europe, or heaven forbid, the cost of an air ambulance back to the UK, that ceiling provides a massive amount of peace of mind.
It’s not just about the big emergencies, either. The refresh includes cover for emergency dental work (up to £250) and overseas funeral expenses. It’s the kind of stuff we don’t like to talk about over a BBQ at the campsite, but knowing it’s there means you can actually relax.
A GP in Your Pocket
Speaking of health, one of the most practical additions for 2026 is the 24-hour GP service. We’ve all been there – you’re in a remote part of the Highlands or a quiet village in France, and someone starts feeling a bit under the weather. Is it just a bit too much sun, or is it something more?
Instead of trying to navigate a local pharmacy with a pocket dictionary, you can now access a UK-based GP service via your phone at any time of the day or night. It’s like having a doctor in the passenger seat. They can offer advice, reassurance, and help you decide if you need to find a local clinic or if a bit of rest will do the trick.

No More Health Screening (Mostly!)
This is arguably the “big win” for many of our customers. Historically, if you had a pre-existing medical condition – even something well-managed – you’d have to go through a lengthy screening process. You’d be on the phone for ages, explaining your history, and often ended up paying a hefty premium for the privilege.
The 2026 refresh has flipped the script. They now offer automatic cover for a huge range of pre-existing medical conditions without the need for additional screening or extra premiums. It makes the whole process of getting motor insurance and travel cover much more straightforward.
Of course, if you have very complex needs or are over the age of 79, there are still some extra bits to check, but for the majority of tourers, the “red tape” has been significantly cut. It’s a breath of fresh air for those who just want to get on the road without a mountain of paperwork.
When the Trip Goes Sideways
We’ve talked a lot about health, but what about the vehicle? After all, a motorhome or a caravan isn’t just a car – it’s your kitchen, your bedroom, and your escape pod. If your vehicle has a mechanical tantrum, it doesn’t just ruin your transport; it potentially ruins your entire holiday.
The 2026 update includes much more robust cover for trip cancellation and curtailment (up to £2,500). What’s really clever here is that it includes cover if a vehicle-related incident prevents you from travelling in the first place. If your motorhome breaks down on the driveway the day before you’re due to board the ferry, the policy kicks in to help cover the costs of the holiday you’re missing.
And if the worst happens while you’re abroad and a medical emergency means you can’t drive your pride and joy home, the policy covers vehicle repatriation. They’ll get your motorhome or caravan back to the UK so you don’t have to worry about leaving it in a foreign garage while you recover. It’s worth checking your RAC breakdown insurance alongside this to ensure you have 360-degree protection for both the “house” and the “engine”.

Is it Just for Europe?
While the Red Pennant name is famous for European adventures, the 2026 refresh actually offers UK-only options too. With more people choosing “staycations” and exploring the hidden gems of the British Isles, having a travel-style policy for domestic trips makes a lot of sense.
Whether you’re heading to the Lake District or the Gower Peninsula, having that 24/7 GP access and cancellation protection is just as valuable as it is in Spain. Plus, if you’re planning multiple trips throughout the year, the annual multi-trip option (covering up to 45 days per trip) is usually the most cost-effective way to stay protected.
A Few Practical Reminders
Before you dash off to renew your membership, there are a couple of things it’s worth keeping in mind for the 2026 season:
- Age Limits: The standard cover is great up to age 79, but if you’ve hit the big 8-0, you’ll need to look at the specialist options. Don’t worry, they still want you on the road – it just takes a slightly different policy!
- Trip Length: If you’re planning a “grand tour” that lasts more than 90 days for a single trip, you’ll need to declare that. The standard cover is generous, but even it has its limits.
- Check Your Other Policies: It’s always a good idea to see how your travel cover sits alongside your general insurance needs. For example, does your home insurance cover the high-value gadgets you’re taking in the caravan?
Wrapping Up
At T&R Direct, we always say that insurance shouldn’t be a chore – it should be the thing that lets you stop worrying. The 2026 refresh of the Red Pennant product is a great example of that. It’s been modernised, simplified, and designed to catch you if you fall, whether that’s a medical mishap or a mechanical meltdown.
The road is calling, and with the right cover in place, you can answer it with total confidence. So, check your dates, top up the water tank, and get out there. We might see you at a campsite soon – we’ll be the ones with the slightly burnt sausages on the BBQ!
